This charismatic 1980s house informed the overall approach to this garden renovation: a simple, angular layout of mass plantings of garden classics. Native multi-stem vine maples are strategically employed as slender hedges, meticulously pruned each year to create “outdoor curtains” that both frame and temper the views from adjacent rooms.

In the backyard, where space is dominated by a swimming pool, narrow perimeter beds are set to burst with foliage to evoke the lush ambiance of a subtropical resort despite the limited gardening area. A handful of Belgian-made, organically shaped terracotta planters add to the planting opportunities.

When the existing architecture sings loud and proud, we ensure the landscaping continues the tune rather than trying to change it.
